NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman wants to assure hockey fans that the obstruction rule will
be enforced this season.
"It remains a point of emphasis. We're continuing to hammer the fact that we want
obstruction called, we want the game more wide open and we're
continuing to push in that direction," Bettman said during a Friday conference call with
reporters.
The Commissioner personally visited the NHL officials training camp several weeks ago
to deliver the message. "Basically, I told them, 'I write your paychecks; I'm ordering you
to do this. And if that's not good enough, I'm begging you to do this. We want the obstruction
called."
Bettman stressed there had been no change in the rule - or in how referees were directed
to enforce it - over the last two years. "There has not been any change in directive from
two years ago, one year ago or now," he said. "Periodically the car may deviate
from the road. "We apologize for that, but we haven't given any contrary
directions and we intend to stay the course.
